Kazakh-Turkic Scientific Research Institute, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Astana, Kazakhstan
By Dr. Nurfer TERCAN
Our goal: unity in language, in thought and in work. “Unity in education, unity at the table,” unity in the dream, we said, and set out on the road…
But, as it turns out, one does not set out with those who have merely been persuaded; one needs believers, people who dream the same dream; one needs unity in the language of the heart, oneness in thought and in work!
With my esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. Lyailya Mutalieva, Head of the Department of Tourism Management at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, we believed, and we set out together.
Now, in the most turquoise of tones, we share with you the excitement of founding a new research institute to strengthen the historical and cultural ties among all the Turkic-speaking countries, stretching from the Balkans at the western tip of the crescent of the Turkic world to the Altai at its eastern tip!
The Kazakh-Turkic Scientific Research Institute was established at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University on 1 July 2025 in order to develop joint educational projects in many fields.
While the Research Institute aims to conduct sociological studies using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and evaluate data for social research, it will also provide a unified intellectual framework for researchers, and their collaborators, in archaeological cultural-heritage tourism, archaeotourism, osteoarchaeology, cultural heritage tourism, the accommodation, travel and service sector, gastronomy, sociology, history, the sociology of tourism, the sociology of culture and sustainable social projects (zero-waste management, green energy and so on).
Programmes are planned under the heading of developing cultural tourism and reviving, protecting and steadily developing the cultural heritage of the Turkic-speaking states. Since the contribution of the Silk Road to world culture, civilisation and social life is a matter of interest, this work focuses first of all on the past. Detailed studies continue on the emergence of the Silk Road in Kazakhstan, on the Silk Road routes crossing the territory of Kazakhstan and on the historic cities and settlements along those routes. Knowing that Turkestan (Central Asia) was the cradle of ancient civilisations, research reminding us that technology, science, philosophy and religious-mystical teachings spread to the world from here will be taken up anew, especially through gastronomy research. The future of the Great Silk Road, the focus of many studies, hundreds of books and articles, of literature and documentary films, is now the main subject of many international meetings, and it awaits being addressed once more through the concepts of archaeo-tourism and gastro-tourism.
It was founded to protect, develop, carry forward and hand down to future generations the legacy of Abai Kunanbayev, Ismail Gaspirali, Chingiz Aitmatov, Ziya Gökalp and many other Turkic intellectuals who taught us the importance of education on the way to unity of language. The Kazakh-Turkic Scientific Research Institute of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University has become a noble goal for the future of the Turkic world: unity of language, thought, education, culture and gastronomy. Even today it is inevitable that the Turkic world should act together in matters concerning every kind of cultural activity. Indeed, in view of all the developments in the world, and especially the new paradigm shift in the process of digitalisation, cooperation among the Turkic states should be seen not only as a necessity but also as a call of history. As a first step in answering that call, and as its first project, the Kazakh-Turkic Scientific Research Institute of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, together with the TİKA Astana Coordination Office, has developed certification programmes in Vocational Turkish for Tourism, held as summer courses from 28 July to 8 August 2025.
